Before anyone arrives, the table waits.

A linen cloth falls softly over its edges, gathering into folds that almost reach the floor. Glasses catch the last light from the windows. Between them, flowers lean into the spaces left for conversation: a rose turned towards an empty chair, a slender stem suspended above the linen, a few petals opening wider in the warmth.

You walk along the table, reading the names.

Here is the friend who knew you before you knew yourself quite so well. Here is your grandmother, who will notice the flowers first. Across from her sits someone who has travelled a long way to be with you. Further down, two people who have never met will discover, perhaps before the first course is cleared, that they have something unexpected in common.

For now, their places are quiet. But you can already imagine their voices.

The shape of a welcome

There is something intimate about preparing a place for someone. Choosing their seat. Folding a napkin. Writing their name on a small piece of paper and setting it where they will find it.

These gestures are easily overlooked in photographs, yet they are among the first things your guests will experience. A chair pulled out without difficulty. Water poured after a warm afternoon. Enough room to rest their hands beside the plate. Flowers low enough to see the person opposite.

Beauty lives comfortably here, among these small considerations.

You might choose ivory linen and burnt orange blooms, or pale lavender against green stems. Perhaps the plates are simple, their quiet surfaces leaving room for the colours around them. Perhaps a familiar flower appears at every setting because it once grew in a garden you loved.

The table begins to feel like yours through the things you recognise in it.

When the chairs fill

Then the doors open, and the arrangement changes.

A bag is tucked beneath a chair. Someone moves a glass closer. Napkins unfold across laps, bread is passed from hand to hand, and the carefully placed name cards become the beginning of introductions.

Candle flames tremble as people lean forward to hear one another.

Across the table, your partner catches your eye. For a moment, you watch the gathering together: the people who raised you, the friends who stayed, the new faces who will become familiar in the years ahead.

A speech begins. There is laughter at a story you hoped no one would tell, followed by a sentence so tender that you lower your eyes. Beside your plate, a little wax has slipped down the candle.

What remains

Later, someone will leave their chair to dance. Others will draw closer, continuing a conversation over the last of the wine. The linen will carry a few stains. A flower will have fallen against its vase.

You may remember the table most clearly like this, after hours of being lived around.

And when you think of it years later, perhaps you will hear a particular laugh or remember a hand reaching across to yours. The flowers and candlelight will still be there, surrounding the memory of everyone who came to sit with you.
